USA Volleyball Chesapeake Region
Year 2002 Candidates for the Board of Directors
If you are interested in becoming a CHRVA Board Member, please check out the Election Process.  Your nomination must be received by the Chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee by March 1, 2002 to be included on the Official Candidate Slate.  If, by the deadline, there are still more available seats than candidates, nominations will be accepted from the floor during the Annual General Membership Meeting.

The official slate of candidates was closed as of March 1, 2002.

Since there are seven (7) available seats on the Board and nine (9) names on the Official Candidate Slate, nominations will NOT be accepted from the floor during the Annual General Membership Meeting.

The following tables provide information about the individuals seeking election to the CHRVA Board of Directors for the year 2002.  Both tables specify whether or not the candidate is currently on the Board (Incumbent) and presents some personal comments as a means of introduction.  If available, a picture has also been posted.

This year, the Chesapeake Region will make exclusive use of mail-in ballots to determine which candidates will be selected to fill the open seats on the Board of Directors.  Instructions and official ballots are included in the March 2002 Digs Newsletters that are addressed to CHRVA members.  Your votes determine the composition of the body that will make all of this Region's decisions. We urge you to get involved in Region operations at the most basic level by returning your completed election ballot by the deadline.

The Official Candidate Slate is a table that identifies all candidates who have met the nomination requirements specified in the CHRVA Bylaws by the March 1, 2002 deadline.

If you have any questions about the candidates or the process, please feel free to contact our Nominations and Elections Chair Eugene Yee at eugene.yee@chrva.org or 410-309-0090.

I’ve been involved in many different aspects of the game of volleyball, as a player, coach, referee, scorer, rater, clinician, manager, statistician, and, finally, Board member.  I hope to continue to apply what organizational skills I have to help make the Region as efficient and responsive as possible to the volleyball community at large.  I will devote my experience, focus, optimism, meticulous attention to detail, and dedicated work ethic to every project I tackle.  I believe constant communication and interaction with members of the Board and players are key to a great volleyball experience for all.  By encouraging better communication, we can hopefully reduce possible confusion, clarify misunderstandings, and pre-empt problems before they occur.  Enhanced member understanding should always be a priority.  I hope to continue to use my past experience and involvement with volleyball to increase the enjoyment of the sport at all levels.

As Communications Chair, I have done my best to bring you the information you need more quickly, easily, and accurately through the Digs, in the Handbook, and on the Website.  My efforts began by focusing more attention on regularizing the Digs schedule to ensure that you receive your quarterly newsletter in time to actually use some of the information made available and on providing more interesting content.  Next, with the tireless and invaluable help of Jeff Maynard, I was finally able to publish the Region’s long overdue updated version of its Handbook.  More recently, I have devoted my energies toward exploring ways to better present information to you via the CHRVA Website.  While I hope you have noticed some of these and other changes in the Region’s efforts to better communicate important information, I feel there is still a long long way to go.  I would like to continue to contribute my time and energy toward helping our Region become one of the best.

I’m Rod Anderson, your current Vice President on the CHRVA board.  I started playing in the Chesapeake Region in 1992 and have organized and played on teams continuously since.  Started refereeing in 1996 to save the team some money, and once I got the hang of it, really enjoyed it.  I now average 4 times per week during the season.  A competitor on another team invited me to play on an age team at the 2000 Nationals in Columbus.  What a blast!  If you ever get the opportunity, go for it!  CHRVA is a quality organization that needs all our support to keep volleyball the great sport it is.  Everyone can contribute.  I hope I’m doing my part.  Your vote would be appreciated.

Volleyball has been a lifelong sport for Jake.  He has been playing for 45 years, coached four Senior Olympic teams while in New Mexico (1996 – 1998) and has been a member of the CHRVA Board of Directors for 3 years.  He helped establish and helps direct the activities of the Mid Atlantic Club (MAC).  Over the past ten years MAC teams have competed in regional, state, national and international competition winning over a dozen gold medals in USAV national competition and another ½ dozen in national Senior Olympic events.  Jake believes that CHRVA policies and programs should be based on the desires of the players, coaches and officials in the region.  He conducted the membership survey in 2000 that  produced a change in the election process and has influenced board discussions about tournament formats, rule changes, and revisions to the region’s bylaws.  Jake is a TREE (Theoretically Retired Ex Executive) who occasionally serves as a consultant to organizations in the areas of performance measurement and management, strategic planning, and Balanced Scorecards.
Chris Cant

I am interested in joining the Board so that I can extend my contributions to the region beyond what I have accomplished managing teams, tournaments, and officiating crews.  Specifically, I would like to:
  • be a voice for the players, coaches and officials of the region.  Many players and officials have come to me with questions or problems about how things are done procedurally.  I am always happy to help them find the answers and would like to do more to increase the involvement at all levels and clear up the mysteries of building successful programs.
  • explore the interest in the region of co-ed and reverse co-ed tournaments.  Our area leagues are filled with teams that love a sport where men and women compete together, yet no one has sanctioned a tournament in this region where teams can play at the highest level.  I’d like to see some teams from the Chesapeake Region at Nationals in the next few years.
  • work with the many colleges and universities in the area to encourage their graduates to join CHRVA.  Every high school and juniors player knows that they have to play in college to take their game to the next level, but many college graduates don’t know that USAV exists or how to join.  Many skilled adults give up the sport after the company picnic.  I would be enthusiastic to head a program that reaches out to these players and encourages them to join USAV.  This relationship could be further extended to the new women’s professional league (the NWPVL) that has formed and which includes the D.C. Dragons.  Certainly CHRVA and a professional league should form a close bond that supports volleyball for everyone in the region.
I have been a player and team ref/scorekeeper since 1998.  I was the team representative for my first team in the 1998-99 season and I started my own club in 2001.  The Impact Volleyball Club has now expanded to Men's BB, Men's 30+, Women's BB, Women's 30+ and we are working out the details to take the two BB teams to Nationals.  I am the team rep for all four, manage the funds, and set up the practices.  I also coach the women's teams at practice and when I'm not playing the same day.  I hosted two regular tournaments this year and an "emergency tournament" both this year and last.  (The scheduled tournaments were cancelled so I picked up the date and ran the tournament on very short notice.)

I was a Provisional referee for two seasons and am now in my second season as a Regional referee.  I am part of the Referee Development Program and have done ratings for refs and scorekeepers. This is also my second season as a Regional scorekeeper.  I began working as a PAVO and NCABVO referee last year.  I have worked in Montgomery County High Schools and at UDC as a referee.  I also worked at GW and GMU as a line judge.  I have worked for over two years as a referee at Volleyball House, as well as some work for the NSA league and Fairfax Sportsplex.  I believe I am approaching 1000 matches worked.  I am also involved, as a referee, in the NWPVL that is beginning in the area.

CHRVA Registrar 1990 - Present
Board of Directors 1986 - 1996;  2000 – Present
Registered member of CHRVA since 1978

I am running for another term of the CHRVA Board of Directors because of my love of volleyball and my desire to contribute to the organization that supports it.  I first registered with CHRVA while I was still in college, and have become more involved with each passing year.

I have not only participated as a player, but have served as a Junior Olympic boys coach for the past 15 years and also as an assistant coach for my daughter’s juniors team.  Being both a player and coach has provided me with the opportunity to attend men’s tournaments of all levels (which is where our boys play most often), women’s A/AA tournaments and junior girls and boys tournaments.  I have spent countless hours in the gym observing both budding problems and achievements attained there.

As registrar I have contact with every team in the region, and am often the person who gets called when something is unclear and a reference is needed.  I have made it a point of pride to return registration materials in the fastest time possible in order to ensure maximum participation of registered members.   I try to make note when there are specific complaints about regional matters, and do my best to bring up problems and suggestions to the appropriate authority.

I wish to continue my term of service on the Board because I have knowledge of its progression and shaping over the last 20 years, and I want to make sure that we keep heading in a player-oriented direction.  I have attended and participated in almost every Board meeting since 1986, and I feel that I can still be of use in a Director capacity.

Womens A Division Coordinator   4 years  (1995 – 1999)

          CHRVA Volunteer Manager
  2 years   (2001 – 2002)

My volunteer service to the Chesapeake Region Volleyball Assosiation began several years ago when there was a vacant staff position and I decided to request the opportunity to be the Women’s A Division Coordinator.  Shortly thereafter, I was elected to the Board of Directors.  Little did I know that the small steps I took would lead to many years of dedication and service to the CHRVA membership.  I have enjoyed the challenge and welcome the opportunity to continue to provide leadership, guidance, management, and an overall enjoyable volleyball experience for both adults and juniors.

Based on my years of experience as a CHRVA player, team representative, referee, scorekeeper, coach, Division Coordinator, and Board member, I believe I can serve the Board and its membership by providing a solid foundation of knowledge and expertise about the sport of volleyball and the management of the Region’s business and activities.  If re-elected to the Board, my goal would be to maintain my dedication to serve the CHRVA membership through the many “hats” I wear and to improve the overall quality of CHRVA as well as increase its membership.

I am interested in pursuing this position because I feel very strongly that I have much to offer in the way of leadership and knowledge in the sport of volleyball.  I have been actively participating and coaching this sport for the past 10 years and have been extremely successful in attaining the high goals I state for any program I participate in.
My resume will display an individual who has many years of experience in administration in the USA Volleyball area.  I have been a representative on the Board of Directors for the Pioneer Region in Kentucky.  I feel my knowledge in the many areas of administration and coordinating of clubs will be beneficial to the Chesapeake Region.  I hope to bring to the Board of Directors the voice of our 17’s and 18’s age division, which I feel will provide an essential tool in helping the Chesapeake Region reach its goals of successfully developing into the premier region within USA Volleyball.
